Technical
Copywriting Samples
Product
and service manuals require a different type of writing. You
can't be as creative as in many copywriting projects. Nevertheless,
it requires a certain degree of creativity to be able to see
the stages a new user goes through with a product that you've
gotten to know inside and out. That's what a technical writer
has to do.
For three years before moving to Florida, I wrote technical
copy full-time for Japan's largest telecommunications service
provider. Projects included national telephone service guides,
product catalogs, and manuals for cell phone services and
handsets. I helped develop word usage policies for the company's
Foreign Language Information Center and worked closely with
the company's advertising agency to ensure quality production
of marketing and technical materials.
I enjoy distilling complex information into easy-to-read copy
that informs and educates the target audience.

Note: There is
a fine line between copywriting and technical writing. Many
think "technical writing" simply
refers to writing about industrial or technical products. Well,
one could argue it does. But typical
documents produced by technical writers include user manuals,
reports, instructional programs, procedure booklets, etc. A
print ad for a complex piece of machinery is not called "technical
writing". That's copywriting. (I do both.)
